Not sure if you know this or not, but I am a dreamer. God often speaks to me in dreams, and lately, I’ve been seeing scenes of chaos—danger unfolding and people panicking. These dreams have reminded me of the importance of being prepared and spiritually equipped to stand against the enemy when evil arises.
Psalm 91 provides a powerful blueprint for staying anchored in God’s protection, even in uncertain times. While reading and meditating on this chapter, I would like for us to realize that some things are required of us to remain covered by the shadow of God. I want us to be and remain protected by doing our part and this is remaining in right standing.
Living in the Shelter of the Most High
Psalm 91:1 says:
Those who live in the shelter of the Most High will find rest in the shadow of the Almighty."*
To “live” or “abide” in God’s shelter means to remain, stay, or even settle in His presence. It’s showing strong commitment, much like being rooted in a place of safety.
- “Shelter” refers to the secret place, a covering where we are shielded.
- “Shadow” symbolizes protection—God’s refuge over us.
When we commit to living in God’s presence daily, we gain access to His peace and security, even when the world feels chaotic.
Trusting in the Refuge of God
Psalm 91:2 continues:
“This I declare about the Lord: He alone is my refuge, my place of safety; he is my God, and I trust him.”
Here, we see that God is not only a shelter but also a refuge and fortress—a strong place of defense. Trusting Him means having confidence, boldness, and security in knowing He’s got us covered.
Psalm 91:14 adds:
“The Lord says, 'I will rescue those who love me. I will protect those who trust in my name.'”
“Love” here means to cling to, to delight in, or to join closely.
To “trust in His name” means to know Him personally and acknowledge His power and authority in our lives.
The key is an intimate, abiding relationship with God—not a religious or works-based mindset, but a deep connection with the living God who loves us unconditionally.
How to Cultivate an Intimate Relationship with God
To move to a place of abiding, here are practical steps to deepen your walk with Him:
1. Start Your Day with God
Psalm 5:3 says:
"Listen to my voice in the morning, Lord. Each morning I bring my requests to you and wait expectantly."
Beginning your day with God sets the tone for everything else. Whether it’s prayer, worship, or simply quiet time, make Him your first priority.
2. Guard Your Heart and Eyes
We must be vigilant about what we allow into our hearts and minds. When we become corrupted by what we see or consume, we lose the ability to be a blessing to others and instead become spiritually weak.
3. Develop Deep Spiritual Roots
Luke 8:13 warns:
“The seeds on the rocky soil represent those who hear the message and receive it with joy. But since they don’t have deep roots, they believe for a while, then they fall away when they face temptation."
Without deep roots, we can’t withstand life’s pressures. Two ways to build those roots are:
- Daily Time with God: Spend time in prayer, reading Scripture, and listening to His voice. Whether through journaling, worship music, or quiet reflection, prioritize consistency.
- Community with Believers: Join a small group or fellowship where you can grow alongside others. Weekly connection with other believers provides accountability, encouragement, and spiritual strength.
Staying Grounded in God
If we’re not making time for God daily, we risk drying up and blowing away when trials come. It’s in those quiet, intimate moments with Him that we’re refreshed, restored, and equipped to stand strong.
Psalm 5:7 reminds us:
"Because of your unfailing love, I can enter your house; I will worship at your temple with deepest awe."
Let’s be intentional about cultivating a relationship with God that transforms us from the inside out. Spend time in His presence, connect with other believers, and remain anchored in His Word. When we live in the shelter of the Most High, we can face life’s challenges with boldness, peace, and unwavering trust in His protection.
Let’s start today by committing to abide in Him.
